*(Ring, ring…)
*You hear a loud yawn answer your call. He sounded like he just got up.
*You also hear glass and metal clink distantly in the background, along with the odd sloshing sound. Someone else in the kitchen perhaps?
*Auuh-whu? Hey. This is Sans…*You hear a pause.
*Then you hear a soft chuckle.
*Wow, so we’re doing this thing again huh? It’s cool. I hope you weren’t expecting me to call you again and leave a message. That would be weird, wouldn’t it?*Another voice raised distantly, distinctly tenor.
*Who’re you talking to, Sans?
*Oh, you know. No body.
*Is it that mysterious monster? They should stop messing with people. It’s rude.
*It’s cool bro, they aren’t hurting anybody.*There was a distant “nyeh” of disagreement.
*You then asked about what happened after the incident.
*Ah, you’re really on point about what’s been going on these days huh? Whelp, I s’pose I may as well tell ya what happened after.
*...It’s kinda funny. I would have thought if you knew this much already that you’d also know what happened after.
*So. Anyway. After my party was a complete bust and everyone headed to Hotland we all managed to get out alive. Some more bruised and beaten than others.
*Even my spaghetti survived the earthshakes of deadly terror!
*That night kinda gave us a lot to think about afterwards. I’m pretty sure that it’s changed how some monsters see the world in a completely different way now.
*Which, if I’m honest, it was a pleasant surprise for once.
*So, let’s start with what arguably would have been the biggest deal. Junie Callahan. The human soul who made a lot of us question what Justice really was.
*The revelations of the truth behind the fame and glory of capturing humans from that night changed how some monsters would view life completely. Developed their own sense of Justice. Of course, there were some who knew all along, but none of them - I don’t think - were proud of their accomplishments and continued to live in the glorified views of the public. Most likely for their sanity and to keep monsters happy enough so that they won’t lose hope.
*I’m starting to wonder how quickly word would spread… or if it’ll be kept to on the down-low about what happened… I somehow think that the sudden change of plans may not agree with a lot of monsters. Since, after all, a lot of the public seem to adore the king and his plan… time will tell I suppose.
*I don’t think Asgore, Undyne, the rest of the Guard nor anyone associated with the politics regarding human souls would be in a hurry to make any public announcements about major changes. As far as most of us concerned, we’re still on the lookout for humans and we still need just one more. News of having one less human soul would possibly lead to panic or some sort of uproar, I’m sure.
*Was it right to sacrifice a few to benefit many?
*Or were we no better than the humans who’ve slain monsters?
*Can we find another way with just five, or maybe none of the souls? Eh, probably.
*There’s certainly a difference between the sacrifice of those who choose to do so and those who had no choice.
*I hope that the lessons of the night stick with our monarch and at least make him reflect on how wise continuing to follow this old path would be. There are surely other, better paths we could be taking from here.
*That’s true, phalanges crossed, right?
*Indeed. All of them.
*So, Junie and her brother’s-mind-in-a-robot, along with the other robotic avians were all escorted by my brother to the barrier. Haven’t seen nor received word beyond what Papyrus had told me, so, I’m guessing that they crossed the barrier okay. The only traces of J.O.H.N. remaining at the Core were any extra parts used to upgrade an E.D. Unit and a couple of the canisters which formed that temporary barrier.
*Some humans sure seem to like trapping monsters, huh?
*Safe to say, the king went home to think over his actions and how others think of him now that we know the truth. Not entirely sure what it was, but he seemed to have gone through a bit of an odd phase there that weren’t so… fluffy. Maybe it was because of the guilt he carried from taking those human souls? Hell if I know.
*Not all is bad for the old Fluffybuns though, at least he’s able to go home with his son rather than just be a shell of what he had used to be.
*With any luck, maybe, just maybe the kid won’t turn out so bad. They have a lot of catching up to do. If the kid really is being genuine about changing for the better, I got a feeling that he’s got got a lot of princely duties to attend to.* You noticed Sans had stopped speaking for a moment.
*…
* You ask if he was alright.
*Hm? Wuh? Yeah, totally fine.* You wonder if he is lying.
*I just don’t know how to feel about Asriel being back. I mean, great he didn’t act like a Megalomaniac and was genuinely trying to help monsters...
*But I’m pretty convinced that there’s still some of ‘Flowey’ in him.
*He better not cross any lines because he’s going to regret leaving that cell.
*I will be keeping a close eye socket on him.
*You and me both, brother.
*I also kinda feel bad for Undyne. She was just doing her job and everything she knew and was taught had turned completely upside-down for her. I don’t think she’s used to facing a crowd of monsters whom were so against the king’s actions before either.
*Maybe she’s just used to the whole being praised as the Heroine of the Underground or something. I dunno.
*Either way, I’m not entirely sure about much that has happened with her since she left the Core. I do know that she has plans to discuss with Asgore at some point - kinda obvious now that the king is reconsidering the idea about collecting human souls, possibly.
*I gotta stop by to thank her for saving my life though. See how she’s doing.
*I think she’d like the company. Maybe we could invite her over for dinner instead? Easier on everyone. I could make tacos if it’s Tuesday!
*Dude, that sounds great. We will have to ‘taco’ ‘bout what ingredients to buy for those nights.
*So while the events were happening at the Core, Undyne had ordered the rest of the Guard Body to spread out throughout the Underground and ensure that the citizens were safely evacuated to a safe place which were least affected by the quakes and power outage. Turns out such a huge task went ahead rather smoothly; with minor incidents here and there. Monsters were able to be escorted back home safely and homes which had been damaged by the quakes were given the aid they needed until they’re able to return to the same routine of everyday life again.
*The Guards, however, will be going under a strict re-evaluation. Undyne didn’t take having not only her security breach very well, but also a human soul had escaped as a result of it. I’ve heard that she’s about to put the lot of them through the wringer and kick out anyone who didn’t meet the heightened requirements.* You hear a soft chuckle.
*Man, if they thought Undyne was bad, I feel sorry for whoever has to be re-evaluated by the newly promoted Executive Officer of the Royal Guard…
*I’ve heard that guy takes his job pretty seriously.
*I heard that those guards are more mechanically threaded than even my most complicated puzzles, brother. Perhaps I should feel sorry for them too?
*Heh, nah.* You noticed a slight change of tone in Sans’ voice; sounding subtly lighter and happier.
*Seeing Tori lash out at Asgore like that was really something. I mean, wow, did I learn not to make her angry. Heh, even so, I’m pretty sure that the support for Asriel she and Asgore had been giving really helped push that kid towards the right direction. Pretty sure that her words, added to my brother’s, as also aided in June to be less… trigger-happy.
*Right now though, she’s headed back home to the Ruins, but uh-
* - she’s not exactly going to be feeling alone anymore.
*We’ve been keeping in touch and hanging out more, which is cool. I think she and Papyrus would get along well too once she comes over for visits more often. Might even take him with me to visit her if he’s not busy.
*It’d be wonderful to have her over for dinner soon! She could bring dessert and we could all enjoy a nice relaxing meal without all those interruptions. It’d be a good change of pace after everything.
*That would be really nice. I wonder if she would want to stay the night?
*Perhaps. I’d give up my bed and sleep on the couch for such a noble cause as that if so.
*Speaking of a really cool skeleton, he’s certainly done a lot to prove himself to everyone - in front of Undyne and Asgore no less. I’m really proud of him. It’s always been his dream to get into the Royal Guard, so if this didn’t prove anything on top of the years of working down to the bone and commitment he had I don’t know what will.
*Good thing we don’t have to worry about that though. Especially with that pretty sweet promotion.
*I guess I got pretty lucky, given how everything lined up into such a perfect storm that night.* You hear Sans snicker lightly.
*Meeting Zydras was kinda something else. It felt reassuring that there was another scientist in the group. Meant that I could help keep an eye on things on the field while he helped out with the Core and figured out how these robots worked to our favor. Had an interesting chat with him later when we restarted the Core for everyone. Turns out we have quite a bit in common. He said he lives in Snowdin, so I’ll probably be bumping into him again. Might even get to find out what he does for a living.
*Did I mention that one of things we have in common is that he is also Aware? Weird right?
*So about that Mysterious monster. The one offering advice and had telepathic powers. Haven’t heard from him since just after Austin’s personality had been activated within J.O.H.N.
*Not sure what to think of him. Seemed to be okay with me, pissed off Undyne but I’m not sure about the others. From what I had seen, they had been having a discussion of sorts with some of them… he’s also another one who is Aware.
*What were the chances of me meeting two other Awares, huh?
*Kind of a weird feeling having four Awares present at the Core. Might be me being paranoid, but uh, it feels rather concerning that some variable had pulled us together like that. I don’t recall meeting other Awares very well - memory is a little fuzzy on that...
*...but I’m hoping it isn’t some sort of omen for the future.
*Gotta hand it to the guy, Gust’s impulsive decision to scout ahead did save us a few missteps there.
*Maybe even some lives at some point.
*Some of his actions almost cost yours though; I have mixed feelings about that, well intentioned though it may have been.*A pause and then a sigh.
*I suppose at least he tried, unlike some who volunteered.
*Yeah I think he means well though. A bit selfish at times, but means well nonetheless.
*While losing his magic and powers sucked, he was rather creative in his contributions. Guy runs so fast I think he was one of the ones who left early. Not sure what he’s up to now, but I feel a little bad for his lady-shark-friend. She looked pretty upset when he ran ahead while we were heading to Hotland.
*Cherry, I think, went back to her life as normal - back to that potion shop her mother runs. She has a few things going on in her life at the moment, but I do remember her from the mines and that she was one of the monsters who got the Young Hero's Ribbons of Bravery. Seems like looking out for monsters might be a part of her calling - I wouldn’t be surprised if she showed up to the next event.
*...I’m hoping that there won’t be a next event.
*I gotta admit, I didn’t expect Riverperson to be there, of all places. Normally she would shy away from this sort of thing, but I knew that if it was enough for her to show up, then something pretty big was going down.
*She did say some interesting things at the start, and did help Gust out when we got there; but later on she didn’t say much of anything else. She did seem to know a bit about that stone that somehow helped Asriel regain his former body and for Austin to transfer part of himself into J.O.H.N.
*Kinda makes me wonder how much she actually knows.
*Makes me regret not asking her more when I had the chance the day before.
*It’s okay bro, who knows, maybe we can still find out if we cross paths with her again someday.
*Haruno…* You hear a heavy sigh.
*I don’t even want to go there.
*Don’t tempt me, Sans. We’d be here all day and night if I got started.
*If you see her, maybe pass a message on for me.
*“If we’re really friends. You won’t come back.”
*Brother, if she makes the mistake of coming back, you can be assured that I will send her back to her precious darkness for good.
*Geneva, Hiss, Lily and Muffet showed up…
*That was kinda it right?
*They left early, so, I’d imagine that they just went back to doing what they were doing before coming to the party.
*They seem nice though, a little shy but uh, they probably shouldn’t have volunteered.
*It was certainly a waste of resources trying to incorporate them into any plans to get us all out of there in one piece. They really should have high-tailed it out long before that barrier ever went up. I’m sure June would have let them leave, but I suppose it’s neither here nor there now.
*But I will remember their inactions in the future.
*Didn’t see much of the Kitsune who went by the name of Sakura. I remember her from back with the incident in the mines. She wasn’t as involved as last time but at least she kinda helped out.
*If by “see much” you mean I had to put her in timeout because she doesn’t understand proper time, place, or decorum, then yes, we didn’t see much of that Kitsune.
*… Sort of.
*I’m honestly hoping that Undyne has forgotten about that challenge she initiated.
*It’s sorta weird. She used to admire the guard and had expressed interest in joining at some point.
*Guess that’s not gonna be a thing any time soon.
*Not if I have any say about it.* A pause.
*Oh, wait, I do now. Huh. How about that?
*After the clash with Undyne, Cobalt headed back to her forge and shut herself in. She refused to let anyone in with the exception of one skeleton. Don’t think she has left the place since.
*After the party, Mettaton didn’t see the need to volunteer and kind of just went back to his schedule of being a star, I guess. Back to the norm.
*Didn’t see much of Alphys. She showed up at the party, which was cool. That’s good for her since I don’t get to see her much outside of her lab these days. Everyone needs a break every once in awhile.
*After the first quakes happened and monsters were evacuated from the hall, I’m pretty sure that Alphys headed back to her lab. Yanno, to make sure all her equipment was still running fine.
*I hope she managed okay during the complete black out though.
*So, overall, like the last catastrophe, most monsters were thankfully able to return to their lives like normal after what had transpired at the Core. Ironically, even after the conflict between allies, it has somehow managed to bring us closer together.
*Having two major events such as these which had happened so close together - both of which did put lives on the line…
*...It really puts into perspective how short life can be.
*…
*…
*Whelp, I better get a move on. Got some things to do and monsters to see.
*Take care of yourself, okay? Never know what else this timeline could bring.*...
*Click.
*You then move put the phone away after realising the call had ended.
*However, it began to ring again. Did Sans forget to say something?
*...
*No, it was somebody else.
*Hello. I don't believe we have spoken before. At least not by your perspective.*You ask this person who they are.
*Well, who do you think I am, then?*You try to question them again, but they keep talking.
*I don't suppose it matters.
*Listen, I don't have much time to explain.* ...
*... As much as some would want it to be; this isn't the end.
*What may come will not be as it seems.* ...
*Trust the dark. Beware the light.
*Stay alive. Stay Determined.
*Hopefully; you won't hear from me again.*Click.
*After a moment of confusion, you put the phone away properly this time, and yet...
*A thought still lingered. Just what was that about?
