Snowdin / Re: From One Tem To Another (Bob and Amarillo)
« on: August 04, 2018, 09:38:02 am »
As Amarillo watched the elder Temmie pulling book after book off of the shelves, her eyes widened. What a mess he was making! But, it wasn't anything that she was worried about. She remembered plenty of times where her friends had asked her for book recommendations and she had made piles bigger than what Bob was making. She glanced down now and then to read the titles and flip a couple open so she could skim a page or two. All of the books that Amarillo approached grabbed her attention almost immediately, and she found it hard to pull herself away from them so she could examine the next ones.

The Tem reached one particular book that took place among the stars that brought forward a sudden thought to her mind. She had completely forgotten about the star chart that she had been working on for months. Every week, for about a year, Amarillo had to search the sky for any changes, such as a new star that may have appeared, or perhaps even a new constellation that may have formed. She also remembered with a jolt that tonight would mark exactly one year since she began this little project. After tonight, Amarillo would have to take her charts to an astronomical specialist at the Capital so that her work may be critiqued. "I, um...", she began to say, but her sentence trailed off as she returned her attention back to Bob, who had stopped and turned back to survey the trail of books he had created. Both of them were speechless, but for two completely different reasons.

Amarillo blinked a couple of times, trying to bring her words back. "... Erm, I actually already found, um, a book that I think I'm, er, going to check out...." she glanced back at the books and then smiled apologetically towards her former mentor. "I... er, usually, I would love to help you clean up these, erm, books... but, I actually have to go. I'll, uh, see you later!"

And, with that, the younger Temmie rushed to the front desk, where she could see a line already forming with other monsters that were carrying stacks of four or five books. She wondered silently how the library had suddenly become so crowded. Amarillo looked hastily at the clock and saw that she was about to be late, because she had to chart the stars at the exact same time as she did the previous nights, or her charts would be inaccurate. There was no time to waste! She set the book that she had been carrying onto a nearby shelf and darted out the door, without even a glance back at Bob. A thousand thoughts and plans were racing through her mind, and all she could think about was getting back to her room at the Inn so she could grab her belongings. Amarillo had a feeling that she wouldn't be back in Snowdin for a while.

Amarillo followed Bob down the aisle. She looked curiously at the books as he pulled them out. She wondered which one Bob would decide to show her, they all looked interesting! She flipped open the cover of 1984 and read the first page. She nodded as if in agreement with the recommendation. "Huh... I kind of like this one..." She decided to take this one with her.

She glanced up as Bob continued to pull out books. Her ears perked up as she saw the covers of the new books that were added to the pile. They seemed to be more to her liking, but she would wait until Bob finished pulling books off of the shelf before she started looking at them. Amarillo laughed to herself, knowing already that she would be fine with whatever book she chose. She would probably read every book in this library if she had the time.

The Temmie sighed and nodded. "I, erm, agree. Maybe it would seem more, um, appealing to a student who was more accustomed to... um, geography." She believed that all readers should try to read all genres of books, but Amarillo was still not able to read a serious, nonfiction book without feeling like she was going to doze off.

She perked up her ears at this. Amarillo knew of the many science fictional topics, but she couldn't remember the last time she had read an interesting science fiction book that didn't sound similar to a story she had already read. "I'd be fine with, erm, reading a dystopian novel. I've... um, always had a soft spot for those. " Dystopian novels were, in fact, Amarillo's favorite genre of science fiction novels, and she wondered if Bob had read anything good since the last time they'd met.

Amarillo chuckled at Bob's questions. She had forgotten how the other Temmie could become excited when talking about books. "It was a, er, book containing maps of the ....um, Underground. I enjoyed it, but, erm, in my opinion the author could have been ...er, more expressive when writing it. " She wanted to say more about the book, but, because it had been mostly filled with maps and not many words, she couldn't think of much more to say about it.

Her eyes lit up at his offer. "That would, erm, be great! I had been, um... planning on getting another book, and the, er, help would be greatly appreciated!" Amarillo quickly began to think of a genre that they could start looking for. "Do you know any, erm, good science fiction books?"

Amarillo laughed, but stopped herself quickly. She looked around to see if anyone else had heard her; she didn't want to be disrespectful in the library. Luckily, it seemed as if no one had heard, or cared, so she let out another small giggle at the memory. She had a sudden image of stars conversing with each other and she suppressed another laugh.

The Temmie glanced up at Bob. "Oh, erm, I had been visiting Snowdin... um, yesterday, and I had stopped by with a... uh, friend to look at the books. Today, I, er, decided to return the book and... look for, um, another one."

Amarillo watched him as he read, and smiled to herself. She was slightly proud of herself for finding something that her former instructor would be interested in. She nodded at him. "I really, um, hope that you like it. "

The small Temmie laughed as well. "I believe, erm, that I said something along the line of... um, 'What is star conservation?' " She laughed again shortly. "I, erm... was always getting those two, um, words mixed up. "

The Temmie, after a moment of processing what Bob had said, grinned back at him. She was happy to hear that he was doing well. She was vaguely familiar with the "usual" activities that Bob had mentioned, but she chose not to ask more about it.

She touched one book lightly with her nose. The Temmie had read it a couple months ago, and she had found it very educational and entertaining. "I, erm, recommend this one. It is a memoir from a Lesser Dog, um... guard. Although it seems old, it is actually very... erm, humorous."

Amarillo nodded her head in response to Bob remembering the clearing. "Yes, I go there, um... mostly at night. I'm still working on, erm, learning new words and... um, rules of the Language. " Amarillo suddenly remembered one of their lessons that had taken place in her favorite clearing, and she also remembered that that had been the day Bob had been teaching her about a few of the constellations. She smirked at the thought of herself spouting out sentences that hadn't made sense at all about the stars. "Do you remember the, um, first day you brought me to that clearing? Erm, I believe that was the day I was attempting to find, um, Carina."

Amarillo smiled as she approached her old mentor. She was very glad that she could meet him again, and she hoped to impress him with how much she had taught herself. "It has almost been, erm, a year. I've been doing well...um, what about you?" She stopped to fiddle with her glasses. Amarillo had noticed that she was still stumbling over the words of the common language and she wished that she could just talk normally.

"I have been... working on my astronomy projects. Quite a lot, erm, recently. I still go to that small, um... clearing that you showed me. " She glanced around, unsure of what else to chat about. Amarillo finally looked over at the isle they were in. " I see that you are still, um...into historical fiction. Have you, er, found anything interesting lately?"

The small Temmie strolled into the library, after making sure that there hadn't been any snow trailing her inside. She looked around for a section that she might be insterested in, and finally made her way over to the fiction books. Amarillo looked around for the science fiction books and, once she spotted them, she quickly started skimming over the titles. There were many books about the stars and even more about monsters living above-ground. She pulled one of them out and flipped to a random page.

Amarillo, suddenly curious as to what other monsters might have the same interests as herself, looked around the fiction section. She froze when she spotted a familiar monster wearing a beanie. She shook her head, it couldn't possibly be who she thought it was. Looking back at him again, the Temmie smiled, realizing that it was, in fact, her old friend, Bob the Temmie.

She got to her paws quickly and trotted over to him, smiling. Amarillo hadn't seen the other Temmie in almost a year and she had been wondering how he had been doing. As she approached him, she chirped out a friendly "Hoi!" in the Temmish language in an attempt to throw him off.

It was the small sounds of the Inn that woke her up. Usually, the Temmie wasn't affected by this sort of thing; she was known as a heavy sleeper. But today, she jerked awake when she heard talking outside of her door. Yawning, she dragged herself out of bed and pulled on the sweater that she had been wearing the day before. She had read almost a third of the book that she had checked out, and she was eager to read more. Shaking her head, she found a couple dollars and her room keys before leaving. Food came before books; she had taught herself this a while ago.

Amarillo trotted down the hallway before descending the stairs. She smiled briefly at the monsters she came across, and thanked the Innkeeper as she passed by. As she left Snowed Inn, she thought that the bell was ringing a faint farewell. She knew she would be back, though. Amarillo planned to stay another night.

She headed down the street towards the library. The Temmie had decided the night before that she would visit it again to see if she could find any more interesting books.

Amarillo watched Lesser Dog leave, feeling a it sad that the tour had seemed so short. However, she was glad that she could finally rest. The Temmie walked into the Inn and went up to the front desk. The Inn didn't seem to be very busy, and Amarillo didn't see many monsters in the lobby.

Thinking back on the adventures of the day, she couldn't wait to see her new friend again. She looked up at the Innkeeper and asked, "Erm, could I have a room for one night? I, um... don't intend to stay long."

"Yes, I'm, er..done here. Shall we go to the, erm, Inn now? I think I'm ready to, um, rest for a bit. " The Temmie walked out of the Library and paused to wait for Lesser Dog. She opened the book that she had just gotten and flipped to the Index, suddenly wondering if she might find a map of Snowdin. When she finally found the page for it, she looked for Snowed Inn. When she didn't see it, she checked the date and realized that the map was what historians thought that the Underground might have looked like when it was first created. Sighing, she closed the book again and looked around at the snow.

Amarillo thought the "Librarby" was amazing, and she hoped to visit it again to look around some more. Maybe she would find more interesting books, and maybe even some about astronomy! She couldn't wait to go back. She thought that she might invite Lesser Dog to come with her so that she might have some company.

She suddenly became interested in seeking out the author. He... or she... couldn't possibly live too far away. Unless, of course, he lived at the Capital. If he lived there, Amarillo thought that there was absolutely no way of reaching him. She looked back at the shelf, searching for other books like it. However, she didn't see any that came close to the size of the book she had pulled out. Glancing back down, she read the author's name out loud. " 'Ailec Flem'... That's an, um... odd name. Have you, erm, ever heard of anyone with that name?"

Amarillo thought that she might investigate more on this book, so she decided that she would check the book out and take it with her. She might even be able to finish reading it that night. "I think I'm, er, going to get this book.." She began walking to the front desk to check it out.

"I'm, er...fine." Amarillo turned her back on them and moved over to Lesser Dog. She looked up at the book that Lesser Dog had been looking at. She felt grateful towards her for trying to distract the monsters, but the Temmie still hid behind a bookshelf in an attempt to block the stares. She started reading the human manual and tried to understand what it was talking about. She had already studied many humans tactics, so the information in the book looked familiar.

After looking through it for a bit, Amarillo turned to the shelf behind her. She noticed a small book that had been hidden between two bigger books. As she pulled it out, a map of the Underground fell out. "The Underground... an Extremely Brief History." She squinted at the title, wondering how the history of the entire Underground could fit in such a small book. Curious, she opened the book, and saw that the book was typed in a small font, smaller than normal. The book didn't seem to have many pictures, except for the map that had fallen out. The book was new, and she had never seen something like it before. Amarillo showed it to Lesser Dog, wanting to hear her opinion on it. "Look at this book, um...have you ever seen anything like it?"

She nodded, then smiled. "I'm fine for now...and, erm, yeah we're going in. Unless you'd rather...um, stay out here in the snow, heh." Amarillo looked up at the sign. "Librarby... That's odd, I, um...wonder if they know that it's er, misspelled." Amarillo walked inside, and was surprised to see that the Library was even bigger than her personal one...almost ten times bigger, in fact! She adjusted her glasses as she looked around. She decided to ask the librarian about the sign. As soon as she approached him, however, he answered her question for her. "Yes, we know...the sign outside is misspelled."

Amarillo laughed and turned back to the main room. There weren't many monsters actually reading books. They were mostly walking around and talking to each other and looking curiously at Amarillo and Lesser Dog. The Temmie fiddled with her collar, suddenly uncomfortable now that she had noticed the many stares.
